A couple tricks for washing locks
I have some beautiful Finn sheep locks. They were given to me from a very sweet woman. But they need to be washed. I want to try making a weft from them, so I am hoping to keep them intact. I have been experimenting ways to do that. Here are two things I tried.
Please note hat these were experiments, just things I tired and how they worked for me.
First I have this garden netting stuff. I thought about using chicken wire, but its sharp and I didn't want to cut myself. This also has smaller openings. Another advantage to this is that its firm and works like a cage.
So I cut out a piece long enough that if folded in half it fits in my sink. I pressed down on the fold to make it stay better.
Then I immersed in my very hot soapy water for about 15-20 min. (I have since found that opening up the tips of the locks a little before putting in the water helps.)
When I came back I slowly pulled them out and then filled the sink with clear hot water (no soap) and immersed the lock cage. Again I walked away and let it sit. This worked pretty well for keeping the locks intact. I would suggest if you try this, to use strong clips and place them on all four sides.
Then remove and lay individually onto a towel to dry.
The next thing I tried was a clip all on its on. I placed the locks in the clip and then did all the same stuff for washing as with the others.
This method worked really well too. My only problem was that if the locks weren't placed evenly and some were thicker then others, the thinner ones would fall out. So if you try out this method use a really strong clip. Mine was a bag clip :P
Do you have any tricks to washing locks? I would love to hear them!
